US President Donald Trump said that NATO cannot provide security guarantees to Ukraine, because Russia would be against having an “enemy” on its border, but that Kiev would get “some form” of security.

“There will be some form of security. It can’t be NATO, it could just never, ever happen. NATO couldn’t do that. I mean, if you were Russia, who would want your enemy, your adversary, sitting on your border? That’s not how it works,” Trump told Fox News.

He confirmed that he had called Russian President Vladimir Putin and added that they have a good relationship, but that resolving the conflict in Ukraine is more important.

“Yesterday I called President Putin and I have a good relationship with him, but that only matters if we get things done,” the US president said.

He specified that he had called Putin at around 1:00 a.m. Moscow time, but that Putin was “very happy” to answer.

“Of course he works very hard, as do all of us,” Trump said.

He stated that he did not invite the Russian president in the presence of European leaders because, as he said, it would be disrespectful to Putin.
