Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump, expressing his readiness to work with him to achieve peace. Trump said he was committed to ending the conflict in Gaza.

The Palestinian Wafa news agency published a statement from Abbas’s office, saying the Palestinian president spoke with Trump by phone and congratulated him on his victory in this week’s elections.

Abbas told Trump he was ready to work with him “to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy”.

The statement said Trump told Abbas he was committed to ending the conflict in Gaza and would work with him and other relevant actors “to promote peace in the region”.

Israel has continued its devastating offensive on Gaza since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, killing more than 43,500 people and rendering the enclave almost uninhabitable.

Israel faces a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the blockaded enclave, AA writes.
