Turkey officially accepted July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica

The decision announced in the Official Gazette of Turkey stated that the genocide in Srebrenica, which the International Court of Justice labeled as the largest genocide in Europe after the Second World War due to the murders of more than eight thousand people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while recalling that July 11, 1995 left a dark a mark in human history.

With the resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations at the session held on May 23 of this year, July 11 was accepted as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

It is emphasized that this Resolution unreservedly condemns acts that glorify those convicted before international courts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, including those responsible for the genocide in Srebrenica as a historical event, and advises member states to develop appropriate programs for preventing, denying, distorting genocide and the occurrence of similar events in the future.

“In this context, July 11, which has been accepted to raise awareness throughout the world through special commemorative events, education and public awareness activities that will be held in memory and honor of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, is celebrated in our country with the aim of sharing the pain and condemnation of genocide and crimes against humanity and will be marked as the ‘International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995,” the decision stated.

It was added that the activities that will be organized as part of the marking of July 11, the International Day and Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica, will be carried out in cooperation with relevant public institutions and organizations under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I would ask you for information and assistance in providing all kinds of support and assistance needed by all public institutions and organizations without delay so that the events that will be organized in this context can be carried out in the best possible way.”, Anadolu Agency writes.
