In Manchester, there was an attack on worshippers at a synagogue. At least two people were killed and as many were injured. The attacker was also killed.

He drove a car into people, then used a knife
Police said that at 9:31 local time they received a report from a citizen who saw a car speeding towards people outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall and that one man had been stabbed.

Three minutes later, officers opened fire and wounded a man believed to be the attacker, and ambulances soon arrived and treated four injured citizens with stab wounds and injuries from the vehicle. Police are urging the public to avoid the area while the intervention is underway.

Jewish community “shocked and terrified”

Sky News reports that members of the Jewish community in Crumpsall are “shocked and terrified” by this morning’s attack. Many were on their way to the synagogue at the time for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

One man told her that his friends and family were still inside but safe, and that he was furious about the attack and “can’t believe it happened in Manchester”. Another said that this is an extremely tolerant community where Jews and Muslims have lived side by side for years and that he was shocked by what happened.

Synagogues will receive additional police protection
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that “extra police forces” will be deployed to synagogues across the country after the Manchester attack.

On his return from Copenhagen, where he interrupted his participation in the summit to chair an emergency meeting about the incident, he said: “We will do everything to protect our Jewish community.”
