A powerful explosion occurred in a building in the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas today, the cause of which is still being investigated. According to the first reports, 10 people were injured.
The state television announced that the explosion took place in an eight-story building and that two floors, several vehicles and shops were destroyed in the area of Moallem Boulevard in the city.
Rescue and firefighting teams are on the spot to provide assistance, it added.
Footage broadcast by state television shows the facade of the building blown up, revealing parts of its interior, with debris scattered around.
The Tasnim news agency said reports on social media claiming that the Revolutionary Guard’s navy commander was the target of the explosion were “completely false”.
Separately, in another explosion in Ahvaz, Khuzestan province, four people were killed. The Iranian media report states that the cause was after a gas explosion in a residential unit.
The fire service said that operations to remove the rubble were still underway and would continue until those trapped under the rubble were found.
The explosion came at a tense moment for Iran after the United States deployed an aircraft carrier group to the region following threats from Donald Trump.
