Uncertain Future of the Granit Quarry in Jablanica: Sealing Delayed, Employees Concerned

The Granit Company from Jablanica, known for processinghigh-quality igneous rock, is facing serious problems due to illegal operations. Although the sealing of the quarry has been temporarily delayed, the issue remains, and the fate of 155 employees is still uncertain.

The quarry has operated without permits for years and has now attracted the attention of the inspection authorities of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. The inspection announced the sealing of the quarry, from which stone is extracted, which could lead to a temporary or permanent suspension of production.

Employees have expressed concerns but also readiness for talks. “We are ready to welcome the inspection and hold discussions in order to find solutions,” the employees said. They emphasized that the use of remaining raw materials without continued production would mean job losses for 155 families, resulting in long-term consequences for the local community.

The problems Granit is facing indicate a broader challenge in Herzegovina’s quarry sector, where former industrial giants operate without proper permits, and where supervision of mining activities is often delayed. The inspection is under pressure to balance the legality of operations with the protection of jobs.

While the final decision on the status of the quarry is still uncertain, the employees and management urge relevant institutions to find a sustainable solution that would allow production to continue while complying with regulations, Federalna writes.
