13225098_1184444538273167_2000125314_oPhone press briefing was held today with the US Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute. Representatives of media from the entire European region participated.

At the beginning of press conference, Ambassador Lute provided a detailed overview of the structure of upcoming meetings of NATO ministers of foreign affairs which are to be held on May 19 and 20 in Brussels.

One of the five announced sessions will be related to candidates for accession to NATO: Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia.

“It is significant to point out three candidates for accession to NATO: Georgia, Macedonia and BiH. Their work on preparations for membership is very important,” Ambassador Lute stressed.

Speaking about the accession of BiH to NATO, Ambassador Lute said:

“It all begins with the decision on membership on national level. First and the most important step is that citizens of BiH decide whether membership in NATO is for them. Then a series of reforms comes. That should hopefully lead to the point where the country receives a membership invitation. It depends on BiH how long it will take until the invitation is sent. It depends on your people and your government.”
