13059741_1160099117374376_1194266166_nThe ethno festival of food and music of Bosnia and Herzegovina called “Gastro-Eco Fest” started in Sarajevo, under the motto “food with sevdah”.

This is an event that deals with promotion of natural resources, tourist attractions, as well as the BiH cultural heritage – handiwork, traditional costumes, traditional dance, songs and recipes.

The fair began yesterday and will last until April 23. Over 40 exhibitors will participate at the fair, offering products made of medicinal herbs, honey, different sorts of tea, jams and the like, as well as handiworks, all with the aim of presenting the tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Day of Ćevapćići was held yesterday, within which two Sarajevo ćevapi restaurants shared 80 free portions of ćevapi to the fair visitors.

“The word ćevap cannot be translated to English, just like the word burek cannot be translated without losing its meaning. Ćevap cannot be found anywhere in the world, at least not as it is eaten here. There are certain mead products, but our butchers hide recipes for ćevapi and pass them from generation to generation,” explained Lejla Arnautović, member of the Association “Dio srca”, the organizer of this event, and added that they decided to preserve the Bosnian tradition in order to pass it to the coming generations.

A promotion called “What our people used to eat” will be held. Within this promotion, one beanery will present its products and traditional Bosnian dishes, practically demonstrating the making of traditional Bosnian dishes and modern delicacies.

Another activity of this fair is the raising of awareness of the importance of preservation of the environment. Therefore, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday an action of afforestation of the barren land Borija called “Let’s make Bosnia and Herzegovina more beautiful” will be held. Simbolically, 172 pine seedlings will be planted for 172 killed fighters from Borje.

Participants in this action will also be pupils of elementary schools from the area of the Stari Grad Municipality. The idea is that this locality gets afforested every year, given that this is the area where trees were cut from during the war.
