European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Union wants a strong and effective Europe.
Von der Leyen commented on the European Parliament (EP) elections at a press conference after a meeting of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Berlin.
She emphasized that the election results impose a great responsibility on the parties of the political center.
“Opinions may differ on certain points. However, we all want a strong and efficient Europe,” Von der Leyen said.
She added that these elections also sent several messages to politicians.
“There is still a strong majority in the middle of the political spectrum. In other words, the center has held, but the fact is that the extremes on the right and the left have also gained support,” she said.
Von der Leyen also said that, in order to be re-elected president of the European Commission, she would first seek a dialogue with social democrats and liberals in the new convocation of the European Parliament, AA writes.
