What will happen to Lithium Mining in our country?

The announcement of the opening of the lithium mine in Lopare attracted the attention of the citizens and activists of this region. Environmentalists, activists, citizens and numerous experts – pointed out all the dangers to the lives of people and nature – that the opening would bring with it. It would be the first such mine in Europe.

Research on the wealth of lithium in the part of the Majevica mountain that connects Lopare, Tuzla and Čelić showed a very rich existence of this ore. The research has been completed for a long time, but without any knowledge of the public about it. Now that the public has learned that in 2026, a Swiss company could get a concession on the mining of dangerous lithium, they want to put an end to such intentions of foreign investors.

ADI SELMAN, “Cardboard Revolution”

We are against being slaves to foreign companies that will leave us a scorched earth. This is very important for you to know. And it is very important for you to know that nature knows neither antithetical nor city boundaries nor any other boundaries. Lopare and Tuzla are cities next to each other. Lopare, Tuzla, Čelić, Bijeljina, Kalesija will have all the negative consequences in the case of the construction of a lithium mine.

DALIBOR BALIAN, professor of the Faculty of Forestry at UNSA

Who will help all the people who will suffer from lithium. Because lithium will cause mutagens, it will cause cancer in humans, various types of cancer. Not only in humans, but also in animals and plants.

Two years ago, the citizens of Serbia fought against the lithium mine with constant protests and environmental struggles. They say it wasn’t easy. That is why they want to help the aware citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina to preserve their natural resources and prevent the spread of carcinogenic substances. They point out that nothing can unite the region like land, air and water.

ALEKSANDAR JOVANOVIĆ ĆUTA, Ecological Uprising “Serbia Against Violence”

We must groan and fight against this evil. Otherwise, we did not deserve to live in this beautiful area called the Balkans. And the key word is rebellion. Let’s fight with legal means, if necessary with barricades. Otherwise, we have no choice but to disappear.

The lithium mine would be a unique mine in Europe. Where such a mine exists, for example in Australia, it is a desert. There is no life within a few hundred kilometers. And in our country, here between Tuzla and Lopar, the mine would be leaning on agricultural crops, orchards, rivers, on the Salt Mine, but above all on the municipalities and cities where several hundred thousand people live, BHRT writes.
