What will happen with the Ski Season in BiH?

The end of the year is approaching, so although we should already plan when to go to the mountain and enjoy the winter charms – it seems that the ski season is a little prolonged this year.

Climate change at the global level has caused disturbances that leave a mark and affect the climatic conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) as well.

The year behind us brought an increase in the average air temperature, and therefore the precipitation regime has changed. This year, the weather just followed the trends from previous years, and the warmer and drier seasons continued in 2022.

A word from the meteorologist

“We started the year with an absolute record in Mostar and continued with numerous records in terms of maximum temperatures, and the most impressive was the long Michaelmas summer in October, where we had almost a whole month without precipitation with above-average temperatures. Such weather conditions are certainly a consequence of climate change,” Bakir Krajinovic from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute (FHMZ) explained.

Due to the previously listed facts, there was a dysfunction in the seasons, temperature values and precipitation, which was reflected in this year’s ski season in the BiH mountains.

Although the ski season should already be in full swing, due to the lack of snowfall and temperatures that are above average for this time of the year – fans of winter sports have to wait a little longer.

Bjelasnica is waiting for low temperatures for making snow on the slopes

Winter season 2022/2023 on Bjelasnica and Igman was supposed to be opened on December 13th. Unfortunately for all fans of winter sports, the month of December was marked by a temperature inversion, and the temperatures are far above the average for this time of year.

“The snowmaking of the trails at the Babin Do ski resort started at the end of November, but due to unusually high temperatures for this time of year, we are not able to produce snow,“ it was noted from the Olympic Center (OC) Bjelasnica-Igman.

When it comes to Jahorina, guests cancel or change reservations

On Jahorina, due to high temperatures and lack of snow, adequate and safe preparation of ski slopes will not be possible in the next 15 days.

“Unfortunately, we can’t influence the weather conditions, you can’t fight against nature and we currently have a situation that is not great. It is precisely because of the lack of snow that many guests cancel or postpone their reservations for a period when the skiing conditions will be better. We certainly hope that the weather will improve and that as soon as possible we will welcome the guests in the full swing of the season as they are used to from us”, they mentioned at the end from the OC Jahorina, Klix.ba reports.
