When someone mentions the Unification of the Region, everyone thinks about Yugoslavia

stjepanSpeaking at one of the panels of the first day of Sarajevo Business Forum (SBF), the former president of Croatia Stjepan Mesić emphasized the importance of economic unification of countries in the region.

At the beginning of his addressing speech, Mesić said that the unification of the region is crucial for economic progress and development, but that as soon as the unification of the region is mentioned everyone equates it with the unification of Yugoslavia.

“With good political preparation, economic, spiritual and every other kind of cooperation should be organized. The circulation of capital, goods and services must be enabled, and that is the task of politicians,” Mesić said.

Mesić highlighted that numerous fields of cooperation between the countries in the region have already been launched, but a lot of work must still be done on economic networking.

One of the panelists at SBF was also the Prime Minister of FBiH Fadil Novalić, who spoke about the experiences in implementing the Reform Agenda, saying that the FBiH Government is acting like a “project manager” in that sense.

“Economic integration is highly necessary, because fixed expenditures are too large, which in turn means the lack of competitiveness. Examples such as CEFTA or the Energy Community of Southeastern Europe are proof that we should act as one region. Reforms and harmonization of relations are the most important if we want to act as a unified economy of the region,” Novalić concluded.

The seventh Sarajevo Business Forum was opened yesterday under the motto of the Perspective +16. The main aim is economic networking of countries of the central and southeastern Europe with China and 16 other Asian countries.
