The Council of the Bosniak National Minority of the City of Zagreb, in collaboration with the Association Stara Rijeka and Surroundings, is organizing the commemoration of White Armband Day in Zagreb to honor the victims of the crimes that occurred in Prijedor and the Sana River Valley in 1992.
This year, the remembrance of the 3.176 murdered and missing civilians from Prijedor and its surroundings will be marked by a series of events, including the screening of the documentary film “Strength of Spirit” by Nihad Kresevljakovic and the promotion of the book “The Man and the Photography” by Admira Fazlic tomorrow.
The documentary “Strength of Spirit” depicts the suffering and post-war return to Kozarac through the testimonies of surviving Kozarac residents.
The book “The Man and the Photography” tells the story of Fikret Alic, who was forcibly taken to the Trnopolje camp. A photograph of him, emaciated and starved behind the camp’s barbed wire, taken during a visit by foreign journalists, was published on the cover of TIME magazine in 1992, shocking the world.
Fikret Alic is a witness to the mass crimes committed in the Prijedor municipality in 1992 and the Trnopolje camp, through which over 23.000 people passed. His photograph symbolizes the suffering of all these people. The book, through Alic’s harrowing testimony, details segments of the aggression carried out in this area in 1992.
On May 31st, there will be a traditional gathering at Ban Josip Jelacic Square, where white armbands and educational materials will be distributed to the citizens of Zagreb. They are invited to join in the remembrance of the victims of the Prijedor and Sana Valley crimes and show their solidarity by wearing a white armband, N1 writes.
