Why is Dodik using the Term Muslims for Bosniaks?

In his address to the European Parliament, Milorad Dodik reiterated his practice of calling Bosniaks Muslims. This time he went a step further and accused the European Union (EU) of fighting the “Muslim state” but supporting it in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

On Tuesday, in his address to the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, Dodik continued to use his speech in his own style, which is factually incorrect, politically dangerous, and offensive.

In his speech, Dodik used the term Muslims for Bosniaks even 11 times in search of a way to flatter his right-wing allies and try to play the card of Islamophobia. Revolted by the questions of European parliamentarians who clearly recognized his anti-constitutional activities and ties with Russia, Dodik asked in amazement how Europe was apparently fighting against the Muslim state, and in BiH, it was pushing Serbs and Croats into such a state.

“For me, the civic model means the Muslim model of the majority, it is impossible to do and it is not a story that you can provide in BiH,” mentioned a member of the presidency from Republika Srpska (RS).

Dodik then continued with racist and Islamophobic attitudes towards Bosniaks, who are as Muslims unnatural in Europe, and thus probably terrorists. With this speech before the European Parliament, Dodik, in the absence of other ways, tried to gain some sympathy by acting on some anti-Islamic sentiment.

He also expressed his nationalist views by stating that Serbs and Croats are old peoples in the Balkans, who will be loyal to BiHif its constitutional guarantees of the equality of constituent peoples are respected. The statement about the old peoples should obviously have been in contrast to some peoples who, according to Dodik’s logic, are not so old, for whatever reason.

Dragan Covic, who is usually politically wiser, called Bosniaks by their names, but accused “the most numerous people” of wanting to transform BiH into an Islamic state. The use of the term “Islamic State” should provoke a feeling of repulsion among Europeans towards the side that allegedly advocates such a policy.

Sefik Dzaferovic reacted to such claims.

It will be difficult for Milorad Dodik and Dragan Covic to secure the sympathy of the European Parliament members through this way of addressing, but it will attract the attention of far-right Islamophobic parties, whose support they are obviously counting on.
