Special Representative of EU Wigemark speaks about the Reform Agenda

wigermackHead of the EU Delegation to BiH and the Special Representative of EU, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, visited the BIT Center yesterday in Tuzla, whose fourth object was financed by the European Union.

“Tuzla is a dynamic environment, and I had the opportunity to learn more about their work in the BIT center, which is funded by the EU. This center is employing young people from Tuzla and they have a significant need for software engineers, that is, people from the sector of IT. It is interesting that about 150 students are getting their education at the local university and all of them could get a job in order to double the current capacity of this center,” said Wigemark.

Head of the EU Delegation in BiH said that this story leads him to one of his favorite topics, and it is the Reform Agenda, which is all about creation of new workplaces.

“This brings me to my second favorite topic, and it is the question of excises, which are now in the parliamentary procedure. I must emphasize the importance of implementation of the necessary dynamics in the implementation of the Reform Agenda. Citizens have some difficulties to see the connection between the increase in excise taxes and new workplaces. If we look at it from the perspective of investment in infrastructure, which will bring new workplaces, then the connection is just obvious,” said Wigemark.

When it comes to the opinion that the Reform Agenda is suffocating the public sector, the head of the EU delegation in BiH says that it is good that now we got to some core topics of the reform. When it comes to the real sector, its share in the economy of BiH is 17-18 %.

“This sector needs to be strengthened in relation to the public one, which is huge and inefficient. One of the next steps should be reducing the public sector. It will not be easy because the reduction of the public sector means that people need to find new jobs. The basis of the reform is not only reducing the public sector and the number of employees but the improvement of work,” noted Wigemark.

Director of BIT Center, Robert Martic, said that the ambassador Wigemark had the opportunity to find out what are they doing in the center.

“He saw the fourth part of the center that was financed by the EU, and it is this new building which was completed last year. Thanks to that help, we have increased our capacities for 30 to 40 people, which allowed us to increase the total capacity of the BIT Center to 100 employees,” said Martic.
