Wigemark: The EU has failed in Srebrenica and We are all responsible for that

At yesterday’s commemoration of the victims of Srebrenica genocide in Potocari, among numerous officials, the attendees were also addressed by Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, Head of the EU Delegation and Special Representative of the EU in BiH.

“Over two decades ago, in the heart of Europe, in front of our eyes was committed a crime which is the reason why the name of Srebrenica now evokes images of forcibly separated families whose members were systematically killed. Our thoughts are with survivors and the families of martyrs. We should never forget those dark days,” said Wigemark.

He added that the duty of all Europeans and the entire international community is to remember what happened in Srebrenica. He also noted that the European Union was established in order to ensure that mass killings and genocide never happen again on the European soil.

“Despite all of this, we failed 22 years ago, and we are all responsible for it, as we are all responsible for those things not to repeat in the future. It is very important to remember in order for genocide not to repeat again and to teach our future generation history because, in order to move forward, we have to take a look back. I hope that one day, in not so distant future, the name of Srebrenica will evoke images of a successful local community that nurtures all the values of coexistence and peace,” concluded Ambassador Wigemark.

The Head of OSCE Mission in BiH, Jonathan Moore, also addressed the attendees, and he noted that the entire world is hoping that the 71 victims, which were buried yesterday, will find their peace together with more than 6,500 people that were buried there so far.

“Speaking of victims, we have to talk about the survivors. The care for the families of the victims of genocide remains our obligation and we are present with our team on a daily basis in Srebrenica. We wish, as much as possible, to help Srebrenica to raise again with all of its beauty from before the tragic events that happened – genocide,” said Moore.
