Ljubljana, 13.7.2015. Prime Minister of Slovenia Miro Cerar believes that the European Union must remain open to the Western Balkans and other countries that meet membership criteria.

“Even at a time when it is not realistic to expect the Western Balkan countries to join the EU for a year or two, the enlargement process should remain open,” said Cerar.

Namely, this means constant co-operation with members who want to enter the EU.

“If the social, economic and political channels between the EU and these countries are left open, other global forces will fill that vacuum and Europe will exclude itself from that process,” Cerar warned.

In his view, Serbia has made progress, but unresolved relations with Pristina remain the main stumbling block.
