On the occasion of the marking of the 23rd anniversary of the Massacre on Kapija in Tuzla, the most severe war crime against civil population of Tuzla, a commemoration was held today at the site of suffering, on Kapija, in memory of the tragedy and the killing of innocent civil victims of war in this city.
In addition to members of the families of the killed ones, commemoration was also attended by dignitaries from public and political life of Tuzla and the Tuzla Canton, from the FBiH, representatives of non-governmental sector, as well as numerous people of Tuzla who paid tribute to the killed youth of Tuzla by laying flowers and wreaths at the memorial.
On 25th of May 1995 at 8:55 p.m., 71 people were killed and nearly 200 were wounded after a shell fired from the Ozren Mountain hit the site of suffering.
The average age of the killed and wounded is 23 years and the youngest victim was the two-year-old Sandro Kalesić.
Novak Đukić, an officer of the Army of Republika Srpska, was charged with the war crime on Kapija. He was declared guilty for ordering the artillery platoon to bomb Tuzla from cannons on May 25, 1995 in the capacity of the commandant of the Tactical Group Ozren VRS. In june 2014, Đukić was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Đukić did not respond to the sentencing, under the excuse that he is on treatment in Serbia. Although a warrant was issued for him, Đukić currently cannot be extradited to BiH because he holds the Serbian citizenship.
However, Đukić can serve his sentence in Serbia because in 2010 Serbia and BiH signed an agreement which enables mutual execution of sentences, if the Court of BiH requests it, which did not happen so far.
