Last year, 7.4 tons of drugs were seized in Serbia, which is 133 kilograms more than in 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of that country announced today.
At the collegium in the Palace of Serbia, where the results of the work from 2000 to today were presented, the MUP stated that the smallest seizure, of one ton, was recorded in 2003, while the largest was in 2021, when 8.8 tons of drugs.
Minister Bratislav Gašić stated that the analysis of the results of police work since 2012 shows a positive trend in the fight against all types of crime, as well as that a constant decrease in the crime rate has been recorded in the last ten years.
According to the data presented at the collegium, 113,780 criminal offenses were registered in 2013, and 70,085 in 2023.
The announcement adds that last year the lowest number of thefts in the last 20 years was recorded, and the number of serious thefts compared to 2001 was 77.9 percent lower.
When it comes to the most serious crimes, murder and aggravated murder, in 2023, 78 crimes were recorded, 134 fewer than in 2000, when 212 were recorded.
In the last six years, an average of 5,000 criminal acts of domestic violence were committed annually, and in 2022 there were the fewest cases of domestic violence and victims within family and partner relationships.
Last year, in 2023, 42 people were killed in family and partner relationships, of which 26 were women and 16 were men.
As it was said, in two separate operations with international partners during 2023, the Serbian police seized about three tons of cocaine abroad, and a large number of Serbian citizens who were part of international organized criminal groups were prosecuted.
Minister of Internal Affairs Bratislav Gašić assessed that the security situation in Serbia is stable and that the police achieved good results in 2023, but that this is not enough and that the emphasis must be on stronger work on prevention, Beta news agency writes.
