BiH is a country with the largest mine problem in Europe, and  therefore the BH Mine Action Center BHMAC on April 4, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, sent an appeal to the population not to enter the marked areas where the presence of mines is suspected.

In the statement of BH MAC was noted that in the period from 1996 until today, a total of 3140 square kilometers were cleaned through the operation of the non-technical reconnaissance. The current size of the suspected endangered area in BiH is 1,061.32 square kilometers or 2.1 %.

There are still about 75,000 – 80,000 mines left in BiH.

The problem of mines is present in 129 municipalities/cities or 1,398 endangered locations. Presence of mines directly affects the safety of around 545,603 people, or 15 % of the total population of BiH.

The ten most endangered municipalities when it comes to mines in BiH are: Doboj, Teslic, Maglaj, Usora, Zavidovici, Gornji Vakuf, Sanski Most, Velika Kladusa, Travnik and Ilijas.

A total of, 1,756 people suffered from mines in the post-war period, of which 613 people were killed. Of these, 185 victims were women (11 %), and 250 victims were children (14 %).
