A Pensioner in Sarajevo knits Socks and sells them on the Street to survive

Inflation is slowing down, but the prices of basic foodstuffs are not returning to their old levels. On the contrary, they are growing more and more. The trade union consumer basket in the Federation last month amounted to about 3,000 BAM. There is no help from the government.

Day by day, going shopping is an increasing challenge for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Especially the elderly population. It is not uncommon for retirees who, although they should be enjoying the fruits of their many years of work, do extra work in order to survive. Mila Dunić thus uses the autumn rays of the sun to knit a few more socks and increase her modest household budget.

“530 BAM and here, like this, what I earn, that’s it…
(How much is left when all the bills are paid?)

Oh, I have nothing left, I couldn’t live if I didn’t do this. By God, I’m looking at how to stretch during the month”.

15 years ago, it seems, life was better with much less money. In 2008, the minimum wage was 343 BAM, and 400 BAM had to be set aside for food. In 2023, the minimum wage is 596 BAM, and almost 1,300 BAM is required for food.

And in such situations, any help to citizens is welcome. However, unlike the previous year, when employers in the FBiH had the option of paying one-time assistance of 1,080 BAM to workers, this year there is no such decision. It will be, on the other hand, a one-time aid for heating, but some criticize that it discriminates against the most vulnerable categories, N1 reports.
