Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Semiha Borovac and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for the prevention of genocide Adam Dieng visited the Memorial Center in Potocari, where they laid the flowers and paid tribute to the victims of Srebrenica genocide, and then they met with representatives of the associations of mothers of Srebrenica.
Minister Borovac stated that she appreciates the decision of the Special Adviser to UN Secretary General Adam Dieng to visit the Memorial Center in Potocari and pay the tribute to the victims of Srebrenica genocide.
“The remembrance of the victims is a duty of all those who truly believe and work with the aim not to let that the genocide happens ever again. Besides all the other facts about genocide, today we have the denial of war criminals and all sorts of provocations, and it is very important to discourage those who are doing that, because the denial of genocide is the last stage of genocide. It is very important for us to openly discuss and talk about it, in order to be ready to accept all victims regardless of their ethnicity,” said Minister Borovac.
Borovac believes that we need to confront the truth and accept it, in order to build a reconciliation path, which is a key for the future of all the nations.
Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General, Adam Dieng, said that he is talking about Srebrenica with a large amount of humility. He added that he came here to pay the tribute to a large number of people who lost their lives in the genocide.
“We have to remember the victims of genocide. A large number of families still does not know the destiny of their beloved ones and the search for the missing persons is continued, as well as the battle for justice and for the perpetrators of these crime to be brought before the face of justice. The survivors deserve our gratitude and to see on the faces of these mothers that they have never lost their faith in justice. Surviving victims are giving us the reason and strength to continue fighting in their name,” stated Dieng.
He also believes that justice by itself will not bring reconciliation between the communities that are divided by violence, because it must not be imposed from the abroad. The real changes within the society can come only through a process of reflection of acceptance and a joint consistent heritage to move forward.
“I am very disappointed when I hear that some people are denying everything that happened in Srebrenica. Denying genocide represents the largest barrier to reconciliation, and the glorification of convicted war criminals in this region is really unacceptable. All the victims deserve respect and tribute, and we should pray for the souls of all the victims to rest in peace and that Srebrenica never happens again, and we will never forget Srebrenica,” stated Adam Dieng, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for the prevention of genocide.
