Analysis: External and Internal Debt of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Federal Government took note of the information about the external and internal debt in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity as it was on December 31, 2019, where the total debt in the Federation of BiH as of December 31, 2019, amounted to 5,595.51 million BAM or 25.5 percent of GDP, of which 82.13 percent of the total debt relates to external (4,595.39 million BAM), and 17.87 percent to domestic debt (1,000.12 million BAM).

The largest creditors are the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

A total of 36.29 percent of the external debt in the Federation is debt to the World Bank (IDA 1,120.83 million BAM and IBRD 546.88 million BAM), while 19.9 percent or 914.65 million BAM refers to debt to the European Investment Bank. The largest share in the internal debt of the Federation of BiH refers to the debt incurred by issuing long-term marketable securities.

The total internal debt in the Federation of BiH, including the debt of cantons, cities, municipalities, public companies, and other borrowers, as of December 31, 2019, amounted to 1,002.12 million BAM or 17.87 percent of the total debt in the Federation of BiH.
