Analysis: Gross Domestic Expenditures in BiH

Gross domestic expenditures on R&D in 2017 were highest in the field of Engineering and Technology 52.8%, followed by Social sciences with a share of 13.1%. Regarding sources intended for R&D 44% were own resources, while 38.4% were from central government resources and other levels.

According to NACE Rev.2 classification, highest expenditure for research and development was in section Manufacturing (30.7%).On the second place was section Financial and insurance activities (20%), and on the third place was section Electricity, gas, and steam and air conditioning supply (15.2%), BiH Agency for Statistics reports.

In accordance with international methodology (Frascati Manual, 2002), the highest allocation in the group activity“Industrial production and technology” with 20.1%, followed by activity “General advancement of knowledge” with 19.2%, followed “Education“ with 12%.

There were 3 489 persons in full- time and part time employment engaged in R&D, out of 48.6% were women. Out of total number employees, researches have the biggest share (68.1%).The share of women among researchers was 46.8%. There were 75% of doctors of science among researches (the share of women among researches, holding a degree of doctor of science, was 44.7%), and 17% of masters of Science (the share of women was 55%).

In the same period, 624 persons were hired under contractual agreement or author“s contract to work on R&D, out of 34.6% was women. Expressed in full-time equivalent the R & D full-time was engaged 294.3 person- years. Among them, there were 394 researches, or 207.5 person- years.

There were 80.5% of doctors of science among researches (the share of women among researches, holding a degree of doctor of science, was 32.2%), and 14.7% of masters of science (the share of women was 43.1%).

The total number of R&D works was 757, with majority of work in applied research (55,8%), fundamental research (19.2%) and experimental research ( 24.3%).

A number of units engaged in research and development is 105. Since it is in the business sector 29.5% of the units, in the government sector 9.5%, higher education 55.2 % and 5.7% of the non-profit sector.
