This year, Croatia is the largest buyer of electricity produced by Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), which, due to the small capacity of its industry, has a significant surplus of this strategically important energy source, according to data on foreign trade during the first six months.
According to the data of the Indirect Taxation Authority (ITA) BiH, during the first half of the year, electricity worth more than 671 million BAM, or about 343 million euros, was exported from BiH.
Croatia bought the largest part of that electricity in the amount of more than 103 million euros.
Large capacities for electricity export
The second major buyer was Serbia, which imported electricity worth 88 million euros from BiH, and Switzerland, which imported electricity worth 58 million euros, was the third on the list of buyers.
The value of electricity that Croatia bought from BiH in the first six months of 2022 was slightly higher than in the same period of this year and amounted to 107 million euros, but then the first on the list of buyers was Serbia, which imported electricity worth 157 million euros.
Economists agree that it is clear that BiH will continue to have the capacity to export electricity, because during the war and after it, the country was left without numerous production capacities that were large consumers, and the capacities of energy plants were simultaneously increased by the construction of new power plants, Akta reports.
