Australia recognized the State of Palestine

Australia formally recognized the statehood of Palestine on Sunday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

“From today, Sunday, September 21, 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia formally recognizes the independent and sovereign state of Palestine,” Albanese said in a statement shared on the social media platform of US-based company X.

Albanese said the move was Australia’s “recognition of the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the people of Palestine for a state of their own.”

Canberra’s recognition of Palestine comes alongside a decision by Canada and the UK, Albanese said, adding that it was part of a “coordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution.”

The recognition of an independent Palestinian state comes at a time when more than 65,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s war in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
