The BiH Minister of Civil Affairs Sredoje Nović spoke yesterday in Sarajevo with the Executive Director of the UN Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yury Fedotov.
Fedotov told Minister Nović that the organization has as its goal to improve understanding between member states on global trends and the tracking of illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
Through educational campaigns, the UNODC is trying to convince young people not to use illicit drugs, and that addicts are able to heal and undergo the appropriate treatment.
Nović agreed that prevention is the best and cheapest way to fight against the use of narcotics. He advocated the strengthening of the health system in the part relating to the treatment of addicts.
“A country cannot deal with drug trafficking on its own. Therefore, a regional approach and cooperation under the auspices of the UNODC in this area is extremely important’’, said Nović.
The UNODC was formed in 1997 as an office for drug control and prevention of crime. It is one of the most important and biggest UN organizations and a global leader in the fight against illegal drug trafficking and international crime.
