Presentation of awards to the best students of elementary and high schools in FBiH in the academic year 2015/2016 was held yesterday. Two of the most successful representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina in world Olympiads in physics were not among the students who have been rewarded.
Students of Bosna Sema educational institutions who achieved extraordinary results, won awards and recognitions at domestic and international competitions in mathematics and physics last year did not receive recognition from the federal Ministry of Education and Science, most probably because they are attending these educational institutions.
On this occasion, the Society of Physicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a press release. Over the past 20 years, this society organized competitions at which the most successful students are chosen to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in the world Olympiads in physics.
“Taking into consideration the conditions in which our students prepare for the mentioned competitions, their individual effort and commitment to represent our country, the lack of resources during preparations and very low support from the authorities, their successes become even greater. In addition to all the difficulties they encounter on their way, so far the successful students could rely on having their success recognized and rewarded by institutions in BiH. This year, that is apparently not going to happen.
Precisely that is the reason why the Society of Physicians in Bosnia and Herzegovina considers intolerable the ignorance of successes of our best students – future scientists, professors, engineers and intellectuals – and we find it unbelievable that successes confirmed by international recognitions and scholarships from the most prestigious universities in the world are considered unimportant by institutions in BiH. Namely, the previously mentioned list of the best students of elementary and high schools in FBiH does not contain names of so far two most successful representatives of Bosnia and Herezgovina in world Olympiads in physics, and who are far above everyone else on the list according to their success:
Nermedin Džeković: winner of silver medal at the International Physics Olympiad 2016, winner of bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad 2015, students of physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Sarajevo.
Bahrudin Trbalić: winner of silver medal at the International Physics Olympiad 2016 and 2015, student at the MIT (the highest-ranked university in the world in the field of natural and technical sciences).
In addition, we especially want to emphasize that Bahrudin Trbalić was on the list of students who are supposed to receive the awards published on November 29, 2016 on the website of the Ministry. However, on December 2, 2016, only one working day before the presentation of awards on December 5, his parents were informed, without explanation, that Bahrudin will not receive an award after all. Soon, the website of the Ministry showed a new list without his name on it.
The list of rewarded students of elementary schools was also not long enough for the best young physician in FBiH, who is expected to bring medals from world championships in the future. According to criteria unknown to the public, student of the Elementary School Safvet-beg Bašagić from Novi Travnik Amila Mujkić was not placed on the list. She is the winner of this year’s cantonal and federal competition in physics for elementary schools in the category of eight grades, which is the highest level of competition for elementary schools.
Due to everything mentioned above, as a collective of the Society of Physicians in BiH we wonder why Amila Mujkić, Nermedin Džeković and Bahrudin Trbalić are not among the rewarded students, although their certainly deserve to be according to their success.
We demand response to these questions from all ministries relevant for this issue and all those (in)directly involved in the case of mentioned students: federal Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton, Ministry of education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Tuzla Canton and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Central Bosnia Canton,” it was written in the press release by the Society of Physicians in BiH.
