The famous French actress Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91, the Guardian reported.

Bardot, an icon of French cinema, model and human rights activist, marked an entire era during the 1950s and 1960s.

She had only a few weeks ago dismissed media reports that she had died, confirming that despite hospitalization and surgery, she was still alive.

Bardot gained international fame with the 1956 film “And God Created Woman”, written and directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim.

In the early 1970s, she announced her retirement from acting and became increasingly active politically.

Her outspoken support for animal rights evolved into off-the-cuff comments about ethnic minorities and outspoken support for France’s far-right National Front, which resulted in a series of convictions for racial hatred.
