Infrastructure projects, construction of highways and railway network have been assessed as a segment of developmental opportunity of the entire Western Balkans region. Thereby, B&H and Montenegro hope that next year, on the 40th anniversary of the abolition of railroad connecting Čapljina and Nikšić, concrete activities on its re-establishment will be launched.
The presentation of the project of the Mediterranean railroad is planned in May in Dubrovnik. The Mediterranean railroad, together with the Adriatic-Ionian highway, would connect the countries of the region from Greece, via Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia to Italy, within which one of the key segments is the revitalization of the railroad that would connect Mostar (Sarajevo) and Podgorica, i.e. route from Čapljina to Nikšić.
Route of railroad whose construction should be continued in order to connect it with B&H, i.e. Trebinje and Čapljina, goes from the railways station in Nikšić towards the north. For now, there is no traffic from the railway station Nikšić towards the north.
By the construction of the railway, better and easier transportation of a large number of passengers would be enabled, especially during the tourist season, which certainly makes this railway route cost effective. Its realization contributes to the development of tourism and ecology in the region.
It was assessed that the construction of the railroad Nikšić – Čapljina represents the largest joint project of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a part of the Adriatic-Ionian corridor and of great importance for the entire region, since it connects three capitals by the means of railway traffic: Podgorica, Sarajevo, and Tirana. Its construction would ensure more quality transport of passengers and make the Port Bar available and cheaper for the needs of the region.
