This year, there has been an increase in the number of recorded traffic accidents compared to the same period last year, according to the Sarajevo Canton Police Administration.
The most common causes, as told to Fena news agency by the Sarajevo Canton Police Administration, are improper lane changes, overtaking, then inappropriate speed, reversing on a short section of the road, insufficient distance between vehicles and denial of the right of way. These five causes account for more than a quarter of all recorded traffic accidents.
When it comes to accidents involving motorcyclists, in the first five months of this year, 14 were recorded, six more than in the same period last year. Unfortunately, in the first five months, two motorcyclists died, while in the previous year, in the comparable period, none.
The Sarajevo Canton Police Administration continuously implements preventive and repressive measures aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents, especially deaths of people on the roads. Likewise, in accordance with the studies, the technical capacities used by the Police Directorate are being improved, the aim of which is to detect irregular and risky behavior in traffic and sanction the perpetrators.
The Sarajevo Canton records an increase in the number of vehicles on the roads from year to year, and the road infrastructure is not developing at the same intensity, which leads to congestion.
More caution by all traffic participants, minimizing distracting factors such as the most common – improper use of mobile phones while driving, as well as attention to the movement of pedestrians and cyclists, especially people who drive scooters, would certainly significantly contribute to increasing traffic safety, according to the Sarajevo Canton Police Directorate.
