zanatThe ceremony of awarding certificates to authentic Baščaršija crafts, to artisans who produce authentic handicraft products in this historic town will take place today in the Bosniak Institute in Sarajevo.

From now, Sarajevo citizens and visitors to Sarajevo will be able to clearly distinguish authentic local handicraft products from those that are imported, with the help of tags that would be visible displayed on craft workshops, reports Fena Agency.

18 nominated artisans will receive the certificate of authenticity and trademark protection of geographical origin, which was submitted to the certification of the Institute for Intellectual Property of B&H.

This festive event marks the completion of a long process of certifiying the authenticity of traditional craft skills and products from Baščaršija, and also represents the first step for these crafts of intangible heritage to be adequately identified and evaluated as part of the overall tourism product of Sarajevo.

The certification ceremony will be attended by the Mayor of municipality Stari Grad Ibrahim Hadžibajrić and the Director of the USAID Mission to B&H David Barth.

The activities for certification were initiated by ZUP Baščaršija, USAID-Sida FIRMA project and the craftspeople, while the implementer of the activities was the Agency BE Consulting from Sarajevo.

The Insitute for Intellectual Property of B&H underwent such a process of certification for the first time in Sarajevo. The process included the preparation of regulations and preparation of a road map.

This, along with the authenticity of the first group of craftspeople, had created the conditions for additional trades to be recognized as authentic.

The first group of certified trades includes: Sarajevo filligree, Sarajevo slippers, Sarajevo savat, Sarajevo boza, Sarajevo salep and Sarajevo goldsmith, announced the organizers.
