Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju (18) has become the youngest world champion in chess history after defeating defending champion, China’s Ding Liren, in Singapore with a final score of 7.5– 6.5.
The victory came as a result of an unprecedented blunder by the reigning world champion in what had been a drawn position after the challenger managed to capture a pawn.
In an otherwise equal endgame, Ding made a move that sealed his inevitable defeat and loss of the title.
To the shock of chess fans everywhere, he offered a rook exchange, leading to a lost pawn endgame.
Gukesh thus became the second Indian to claim this prestigious title, following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand.
His qualification as a challenger came earlier this year thanks to his victory in the Candidates Tournament in April.
He continued to impress with brilliant performances, including his stellar play during the Chess Olympiad in September, which India won.
