The Chief Prosecutor at the ICTY / IRMCT, Serge Brammertz, visited the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and met with the Acting Chief Prosecutor of the BiH Prosecutor’s Office, Gordana Tadić, and the officials of the Special Department for War Crimes in the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH.

At the meeting, the Acting Chief Prosecutor informed the IRMCT Chief Prosecutor about the results of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and that, according to the current records, 818 persons had been charged with war crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law in 409 cases.

The amendments to the National War Crimes Strategy were also discussed at the meeting, as well as the improvement of regional cooperation for the purpose of prosecution of war crimes cases.

Some of the topics discussed were the search for missing persons, as Bosnia and Herzegovina is still searching for around 7000 missing persons, as well as the cooperation of associations of victims and associations of families of missing persons from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The need for continuation and strengthening of further cooperation in joint activities through the engagement of a liaison officer and providing access to the database with evidentiary material of the ICTY Office of the Prosecutor was highlighted, as that will enable the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH to achieve the goals set in the National War Crimes Strategy.

The Acting Chief Prosecutor reiterated that the continued support of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals remained indispensable especially for the already identified more complex ongoing cases.

Prosecutor Brammertz expressed his support to the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH in its work and efforts to prosecute war crimes cases.
