On the invitation of the Association of Youth of Majlis of the Islamic Community of Goražde, residents of this town on the Drina River, last night arrived on the Alija Izetbegović bridge, carrying coffee cups that they set up on the bridge, thus marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
Many people participated in the performance “You are not drinking coffee” by setting 8,372 coffee cups on the bridge, to commemorate the 8,372 people killed in Srebrenica.
“That’s the least we can do. For them, for us and future generations. To remember and never to repeat Srebrenica. We must ask ourselves what is our social responsibility for the 11th of July. We came up with this idea with a help of our Mufti, Remzija Pitić. We know that Goražde, as well as Srebrenica and Žepa, was a protected zone and could have had the same fate as Srebrenica. We want to remember all of them today, 8,372 fathers, sons and brothers … to say that their beloved ones were waiting for them to come, that they hoped, “said Amina Salić, while giving her thanks to the citizens of Goražde.
The Fatiha was recited for the souls of those killed on the bridge, and the setting of the cups was accompanied by the Srebrenica Inferno. People were coming spontaneously, setting coffee cups, sitting on the bridge…
“Since we buried 136 victims yesterday, we arranged this today. The 12th of July is the day when many mothers from Srebrenica were still hoping that their beloved ones would show up. It is in our tradition and culture to wait for someone to come for a coffee. I want to thank our dear citizens who have made a magnificent thing this evening. Our message is not only that never should anyone repeat a Srebrenica, but that we were always able to raise our voice, even when the whole of Europe remained silent. Only the Muslim academics raised their voice against the tyranny over Serbs, Gypsies, Jews, and other people that were persecuted by Nazi Germany. This time it is about Bosniaks, about our people, and we state that human dignity is something that every man must stand behind. The man’s right for justice, honor, property and life is a sacred right and we must stand behind it. Our Srebrenica obliges us not to forget that we draw hope from it that humanity can be better and that we can create it together, “said Mufti Remzija Pitić.
