The Commemoration in memoriam of the Srebrenica Genocide held in the City Institutions in Vienna for the first Time

The central marking of the International Memorial Day for Srebrenica in the Republic of Austria was held on July 8, in the hall of the municipal building in Vienna. The event started with the composition “Srebrenica Inferno” in the performance of opera singer Maida Karisik

“The thing that touched everyone was at the end of the event when the organizers divided the envelopes containing a photo and date of birth of a person killed in the Srebrenica genocide,” as the organizers of this year’s event revealed.

The International Memorial Day for Srebrenica was marked for the first time in the city institutions, which is a sign of the support of Austria.

Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies Prof. Dr. Janja Neumann-Bec, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, said that knowing nothing about genocide is terrible, but it is even more terrible to know nothing about post-genocidal societies in the Balkans region.

“These societies are deeply deformed by the rule of terror, and it is important in countries without Srebrenica, such as Austria, to remember Srebrenica and send a message that keeping the consciousness about Srebrenica and all genocides in the 20th century is a precondition for preserving the human substance itself, i.e. the humanity in the time of cynicism and spectacle,” she concluded.
