Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tokio organized the presentation of the cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with special emphasis on the registration of stećaks on the List of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
Presentation was organized within the marking of 20 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between BiH and Japan, in cooperation with the International Artists Center. Presentation was attended by the members of IAC and representatives of tourist organizations.
During the presentation of stećaks as priceless cultural heritage and unique medieval tombstones it was emphasized that they are a part of tradition and culture of BiH, Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia. It was stated that the decision by the Committee for world heritage of UNESCO on the registration of stećaks on the List of World Cultural Heritage is a great recognition for the joint nomination and successful cultural and regional cooperation of these four countries.
Attendees received promotional materials of monuments from BiH that are registered on the List of World Cultural Heritage – the Mehmed-pasha Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad, Old Bridge and the Old Town of Mostar, and stećaks.
President of IAC Terumo Kanaya thanked the organizers for the presentation of unique cultural and historical heritage of BiH, for the information they provided and the photographs of the monuments of BiH. She announced that the next brochure of IAC will publish information on extraordinary and unique cultural values of stećaks. Kanaya said that she expects the promotion of stećaks to attract the interest of Japanese tourists in visiting unique monuments of culture from the Middle Ages in BiH.
