The Daily Star: the UN forgot what it promises in BiH

After the embarrassment they had experienced in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) where they permitted killings in safe zones, the United Nations should not have allowed the events in Myanmar to transpire, according to a comprehensive analysis of the UN’s actions and mistakes published in The Daily Star.

“Great countries have made an ineffective organization of the UN. It is today a platform which it is only talked about and no concrete actions are taken. In 1995, the world watched the killing of thousands of men and boys in Srebrenica. Even before this tragedy, during 1992 and 1993, the UN issued a record 47 resolutions and sent 42 statements. However, the Srebrenica massacre happened in 1995, as many countries could not agree on what steps to take,” it was stressed in this analysis.

Then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that “the tragedy in Srebrenica will persecute the history of mankind forever”. During 1999, he promised that national borders would no longer protect the leaders who abused power.

“But even though the world thought that events in BiH would never happen again, Myanmar brought a new awakening. It is clear that the world has forgotten its promise to establish the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The countries that had the power to stop the genocide in Myanmar have not moved one finger. It was expected that the UN, led by Antonio Guterres, would emerge from its bureaucratic framework, but even he proved helpless,” the Daily Star wrote.

The UN today has many weaknesses and the need for reform within the organization is increasingly being highlighted.

“This would prevent future genocides in the world. One way is to eliminate the possibility of veto in cases of genocide,” the analysis of this newspaper concluded.
