Daviddi meets with Association of Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves

IMG_6447Charge d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr Renzo Daviddi, met today with President of the Association of Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, Munira Subasic, and President of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, Murat Tahirovic, who informed him of their activities relating to advocacy for a possible State law prohibiting denial of genocide.

Dr Daviddi said in the meeting that any denial or trivialization of genocide is immoral and unacceptable. He further emphasised that associations play a pivotal role in raising awareness and building a broader basis for consensus among citizens and members of Parliament, and that this enhances the possibility for legal initiatives to be passed in the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The victims of the war and their families carry a heavy burden. Healing of wounds takes time and, because nothing can bring their loved ones back, some wounds will never heal at all. Great sensitivity surrounds these questions and the denial of genocide, such as the one that occurred in Srebrenica and which has been recognized by judgements of respective courts, is unacceptable. It fundamentally undermines the reconciliation process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in the Western Balkans region as well,” said Dr Daviddi.

Dr Daviddi restated that reconciliation and cooperation are key prerequisites for the countries of the region to move forward on their European path, and underlined the EU’s continuing support for Bosnia and Herzegovina to realise its prospect for EU membership.
