Another earthquake hit western Afghanistan early Wednesday morning. At least one person was killed and more than 50 were injured.
The injured were transferred to hospitals in Herat, local media reported.
A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the western Afghan province of Herat early Wednesday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.
The earthquake, which occurred at 5:41 a.m. local time, was registered just days after a similar earthquake hit the region.
“One death and 55 injured in the latest earthquake have been confirmed,” Ariana News TV announced.
Abdurehman Mawlavizada, a local resident of Herat, told Anadolu that Wednesday’s earthquake caused damage in Zindajan, Injil, Golran, Kehsan and Keshk Rabat Sangi districts.
“We are on our way to Injil district because this time the earthquake caused damage there,” Mawlavizada added.
On Tuesday, Afghanistan’s interim Ministry of Disaster Management announced that the death toll from last week’s earthquake had exceeded 4,500.
However, Mawlavizada, a volunteer working in the affected areas, claims the number of dead and injured has risen to 6,000.
According to the UN, at least 12,110 people (1,730 families) were affected by the powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Herat province last Saturday, Anadolu reports.
