In the first league match after mathematically securing their return to the elite and the title of the 2nd Bundesliga champion, Schalke 04 players looked quite tired, which Bosnian and Herzegovina striker Edin Džeko also spoke about for the German media.
In a guest appearance on NITRO television, Džeko responded to criticism of the team’s laxity, reports the portal reprezentacija.ba.
“We are the champions, that must be celebrated. We celebrated a lot and we were all happy about it. However, you must never give less than your best on the field. Of course, our legs were heavy, and maybe we still had a little alcohol left in us. It is completely normal in these situations, but regardless of everything, we had to play better,” said Dzeko.
Schalke fans, known for their fanaticism, did not blame the team for the defeat.
“They are simply incredible, I have to say that. Not only at home, where the stadium and the atmosphere are really special, but also at away games. It’s a phenomenal feeling for any player to play for such fans,” Dzeko added.
Since coming to Schalke, Dzeko has played ten games, scored six goals and registered three assists.
