Captain of the national football team of BiH, Edin Dzeko, won this year’s national award for sport.
The Council of Ministers of BiH accepted the proposal of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which suggested Dzeko for this award on the initiative of the Association of Sports Journalists. National award for sports in the amount of 15.000,00 BAM was assigned to Dzeko for contribution to successes of the national football team BiH, who enrolled 82 performances from 2007. Dzeko scored 49 goals in the national jersey.
Edin Dzeko was born on the 17th of March 1986 in Sarajevo. He started his career in FC Zeljeznicar and went to Czech Teplice, after which his career went only upwards.
He debuted for our national team on the 2nd of June 2007 against the national team of Turkey, when he scored his first goal. In March 2009, BH sports commentator, Marijan Mijajlovic, during the match against Belgium, gave the nickname “Bosnian diamond” to Dzeko after one of the most beautiful goals of my career. The nickname has remained to this day.
After a lot of media speculation, on the 3rd of January 2011, Dzeko went from Wolfsburg to English club Manchester City for 32 million EUR. This was the sixth most expensive transfer in the history of England’s Premier League, and the most expensive transfer for a player from BiH. In the season 2013/14, Dzeko scored his 50th goal in the Premier League against the team of Crystal Palace in December 2013.
In August 2015, Dzeko officially signed a contract with the Italian AC Roma, where he is still playing.
In his debut season in Serie A and Roma, despite a few minor injuries during the season, Edin Dzeko collected 39 appearances and scored a total of 10 goals and made 6 assists.
Among the numerous awards are Etihad Player of the Month – January and August 2011, Player of the month of English Premier League – August 2011, the winner of the Sixth April Award of Sarajevo in 2013.
In November 2009, Dzeko became the first UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador of BiH. He visited several schools and orphanages in BiH as part of this project. He is actively engaged in humanitarian work and responded to a number of humanitarian activities.
