After last night’s emotional withdrawal from the BiH national team, former captain Edin Džeko also published an official message via social networks, where he once again referred to an event that will remain written in golden letters in the history of BiH football.
“It is hard to put into words everything I have felt over these past few days. A whirlwind of emotions and so many thoughts racing through my mind – right up until last night, when I walked through the tunnel and onto the pitch one last time, wearing the captain’s armband and holding our national team’s flag.
Six months ago, in this very stadium and in front of our people, I experienced one of the greatest joys of my career: qualifying for the World Cup for the second time.
Last night was special. I felt love all around me – from the stands, from my teammates, and from everyone who has been part of this journey. I tried to soak in every moment: the anthem, the faces, the voices, the emotions.
I knew this moment would come, but I don’t think you can ever be fully prepared for it. Nothing in my football career has meant as much to me as playing for my country. So many people have been part of this journey over nearly twenty years.
To all my coaches, teammates, staff members, and everyone at the Federation – thank you for everything we’ve been through together and for everything you’ve given to this national team. To our fans – I am proud that I always felt like one of you on the pitch. Thank you for your love and support, both at home and away. To my family – my parents, my sister, my Amra, and our beloved children – none of this would have been possible without your love, patience, and support.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Today marks the end of the most emotional chapter of my sporting story. But even when I am no longer on the pitch, you will always find me on the same side – the side of our one and…” …of the one and only Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Edin Džeko.
