Vedad Mahmuljin, engineer of the year in Boeing, said that no success comes overnight, the most important thing in any business is to be devoted and fair, and the results will, as he says, come in the end.
“It was hard to achieve this success. There are many projects and issues that must be addressed in the company, and a large number of experts, in majority Americans, while about one-fifth of engineering staff is from around the world. Statistically, the chances that they choose you for the engineer of the year are similar to winning the lottery jackpot. At the closing ceremony was 10 nominations that were presented in detail. At the very end was announced the main prize, which was given to me. Later I was told that I was the clear winner mostly because of the enormous amount of money that the company saved after the development of a new model of airplane. It amounted to over a hundred million USD, “said Mahmuljin.
When he was 14 years old, he escaped because of the war in BiH. His parents were in detention camps, where his mother was killed, while his father survived. He went to Turkey where he completed the final year of secondary school in Izmir and then moved to Seattle, where he graduated from the Faculty of Aircraft Engineering at the University of Washington. Every year during his studies, he was accommodated in a different American family.
He recommended to young people in BiH and beyond to work hard in order to be successful members of the community. Vedad, in fact, believes that only continuous learning and hard work can create successful people.
“Success builds confidence, which is the most important in order to achieve any greater success. You need to build a mindset that you can do everything if you want. You must stop looking for excuses and reasons why something cannot be achieved, and fully focus on finding a way how to make it possible and be prepared that success will not come overnight, but it can take even a good part of your life. I must admit that I learned this from the Americans. This is the main reason why they are materially rich, and the Balkans is not. In the beginning, I would always let up against major problems. Americans are taught from childhood that there is no problem that they cannot solve and that the only shame is not to try, and not to fail,” noted Mahmuljin.
He noted that many things need to be changed in BiH and in the Balkans in order for these countries to quickly develop and advance.
According to him, all members of the community are responsible for bad things to some extent, as well as the good things that are happening in the community.
Mahmuljin believes that every change starts with the new generation and that it requires introducing new standards of ethics and behavior from preschool age, noting that children should not be taught that cheating and manipulation will give a result. Also, he believes that the problem in BiH is that everyone expects the state to solve the problems, which is, as he says, thinking of the distant past.
“BiH is suffocated by state apparatus and until it gets rid of it, it will not be able to bread. Sweden and Germany can afford socialism since they produce products of enormous added value. State and taxes should be removed from the path of foreign investors who will come in this competitive state. BiH should cut taxes in half, dry up the state budget and reduce the number of state employees in half, because there is no more money. If we would do this, I am sure that we will left all the neighbors behind us in 10 years. We’ve got the knowledge and desire, we just need to respect each other with the same respect that we want others to respect us,” said Mahmuljin.
In the end, he noted that he goes to work every day with great pleasure and enthusiasm in order to achieve even better and greater results in his profession and make a society more advanced and happier.
