11 cities across Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrated a fun scientific night as part of European Researchers Night! In Banja Luka, Bijeljina, Brčko, Goražde, Konjic, Mostar, Neum, Sarajevo, Travnik, Trebinje and Tuzla, participants had an opportunity to take part in dynamic educational and entertainment programmes targeted at bringing science and innovation closer to visitors of all ages.

European Researchers Night, Europe’s largest science communication and outreach event dedicated to celebrating science and scientific achievements was organised on 27 September in 25 countries across Europe, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is estimated to have attracted 1.5 million visitors across the continent.

“An event like this in 11 BiH cities requires a lot of planning, dedication and passion and I would like to pay tribute to the intense efforts of our BiH partners in making this event a reality. It is clear that there are many talented people in this country who care about science, research and innovation and I am glad that the European Union is able to support these efforts. Scientists and researchers are at the forefront of resolving some of the most pressing issues we face. They will help to cure diseases such as cancer and help tackle the challenges presented by climate change. Bosnia and Herzegovina as a participant in Horizon Europe has access to EU funds for research and innovation, and has already received financing for 45 projects worth €7 million,” said Ferdinand Koenig, Head of Communications and Spokesperson at the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

European Researchers Night brought together researchers, students, and families, creating an exciting atmosphere filled with curiosity and discovery. Interactive exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations allowed attendees to explore various scientific disciplines, from biology and chemistry to physics and technology. This hands-on approach not only sparked interest in scientific inquiry but also fostered a deeper understanding of the research process.

In addition to the engaging activities, local researchers shared their work and findings, highlighting the significance of education and innovation in addressing societal challenges. Through discussions and presentations, participants learned about ground-breaking research taking place in Bosnia and Herzegovina and how it contributes to the global scientific community.

European Researchers’ Night is annually held throughout Europe since 2005, and is currently supported through Horizon Europe, the largest EU programme for research and innovation. European Researchers’ Night underscores the importance of science and education in driving progress and improving lives. By connecting researchers with the public, the event fosters a culture of curiosity and encourages future generations to pursue careers in science.
