Sarajevo’s cultural summer continues in the first week of September, when the city will host some of the best European plays. Sarajevo Film Fest will be held from August 31st to September 7th and will be produced by the East West Centre Sarajevo.
The top-tier international theater is making a triumphant comeback to Sarajevo after many years of absence.
A fascinating puppet spectacle comes from Germany, and its author is Suse Wachter, Europe’s best puppeteer. More than 100 large puppets and musicians are featured in the play ‘Brecht’s Ghosts,’ which has been a major hit from Shanghai to Amsterdam, and it is on the regular agenda of the iconic European theater Berliner Ensemble.
The play will be performed at the National Theater Sarajevo on Saturday, September 5th at 7:30 p.m.
One of the most controversial contemporary European plays, “I Am Nowhere/ Desvanecimiento,” from Poland, represents a dramatic question about the right to death. Who decides our lives and our deaths?
Norbert Rakowski, a great Polish director, directed a play that leaves a deep mark on the audience and where dramatic and physical theater meet. The play will be performed on Thursday, September 3rd, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The “Death in Dubrovnik”, authored and directed by Petar Pejaković, is a powerful emotional play about the 1991 bombardment of one of the world’s most beautiful cities, which will open the Eighth Sarajevo Fest on August 31, at 7:30 p.m.
At the peak of the popularity of the ancient world, Sarajevo Fest brings Sophocles’ ancient tragedy “Electra” directed by the prominent Greek director Dimitris Tarlow and performed by “Poreia”, one of Athens’ most important theaters.
A contemporary reading of this classical masterpiece was a hit in Greece last year when it was first premiered at the most famous ancient theater in Epidaurus.
More than 16,000 spectators watched the play, and another 10,000 saw it during the subsequent Greek tour. This is the first time a play based on an ancient Greek tragedy will come to Sarajevo. The play is scheduled for Sunday, September 6th, at 7:30 p.m.
