Emir Balić, a Mostar legend and renowned Old Bridge diver, passed away this evening, as confirmed by the Center for Peace and Multi-ethnic Cooperation in Mostar.
With Balić’s passing, Mostar has lost one of its greatest symbols – a man whose name remains forever woven into the history of the Old Bridge, the Neretva River, and the city on whose banks he spent his entire life.
He was far more than just a famous diver; he was the embodiment of courage, defiance, tradition, and the unique spirit of Mostar. His dives from the Old Bridge were not merely athletic feats but an integral part of Mostar’s identity and a sight that remained etched in the memories of generations.
He participated in official competitions twenty times, winning thirteen of them with his signature “swallow” dive. He placed second four times and third three times.
The Center for Peace and Multi-ethnic Cooperation in Mostar – which had previously awarded him the “Architect of Peace” (Mimar mira) honor – bid an emotional farewell to their longtime friend and associate.
“Emir was one of those rare individuals who become legends during their own lifetime. He used to soar from the Old Bridge toward the Neretva with courage and dignity; today, he has departed into his final silence, leaving behind memories that will not fade,” the Center for Peace stated.
The announcement also highlighted his greatness as a human being, particularly in light of the trials he endured during the war. Despite surviving the harsh detention camps of the HVO, Balić found the strength to ensure that hatred never conquered his heart, remaining steadfast in his commitment to coexistence and peace.
“Dear Emir, thank you for every jump, for every story, for the pride you brought to your city, and for everything you represented to generations of Mostar residents. May you rest in eternal peace, and may the soil of Mostar rest lightly upon you,” stated the Center for Peace and Multi-Ethnic Cooperation, extending sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who respected and loved him.
