What does the Family Atmosphere in the Parents’ House look like?

parentsSince May this year, the Parents’ house in Sarajevo became the second home for little heroes who fight against cancer. When they are not in therapy, they relax in the house with their parents, where they have everything they need.

The house accommodates around seven families on average, and every one of them has a little hero who is in treatment.

Five-year-old Sara comes from Cazin and has been in treatment since September 2015. Before the Parents’ House was built, her family coped with the situation in different ways. They were renting an apartment, and when Sara got out of the hospital and was only obliged to come to therapy, they would come from Cazin to Sarajevo just for that day.

“It was a lot harder before than it is now because we had to spend all days in the hospital. Sara could not get out and be with her family because the apartment was too far away. Here we have everything at hand and in the case of emergency intervention the hospital is near. When they want us to cook something for them, which happens rarely after therapies, we can cook here and that really makes us happy,” said Sara’s mother Adnana.

Adnana was eight months pregnant when Sara started the treatment. Her brother was born in Sarajevo and is currently staying with their grandparents in Cazin. Their father visits them regularly and spends some time with them in the house.

“There is a true family atmosphere in this house. We all hang out, children play, we make iftar together, drink coffee. We have everything and everything is great. This is our second home and it is a lot more beautiful than in the hospital because you feel more comfortable,” Adnana said.

There is also the joyful team of the organization “Heart for children who suffer from cancer” that helps parents and children in everyday activities and the organizations that deserves the most credits for the launching and implementation of the project Parents’ House. Psychologist Aldina Selimagić said that they were positively surprised with the support of good people who started coming right after the opening of the Parents’ House and bringing different donations. Over the first several days, they got all products necessary in a house, food, TVs, toys, books, strollers and baby beds.

“Companies gave us donations for the entire year and there are also citizens who just knock on the door and bring us fruit, candies and other stuff. We are positively surprised. We have a great cooperation with several groups who contact us regularly and ask if we need anything, and they make our kids happy,” Selimagić said.
