Fourteen Tombstones damaged at the Martyrs’ Cemetery, Vandals found

The Brčko District Police were notified yesterday that 14 tombstones at the Šehidsko Mezarje in Gornji Rahići had been damaged, and on the same day the police identified two minors who are suspected of being the perpetrators.

The incident was reported to them yesterday at 10:45 a.m.

“After that, police officers went to the scene and took urgent measures and actions to determine all the circumstances of this event, as well as to identify and find the perpetrator.

After the on-site investigation and the investigative actions taken, under the supervision of the prosecutor on duty at the Brčko District Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the District Police determined that a total of 14 tombstones had been damaged, and identified two minors with the initials M.M. and A.B. for whom there is reason to suspect that they are the perpetrators of the incident in question,” the Brčko District Police said this morning.

They added that after the criminal processing of the minors and the completion of all evidence, a report on the committed criminal offense will be submitted to the Brčko District Prosecutor’s Office of BiH.

“The investigation into the incident in question has ruled out the existence of a motive to incite national, religious or other forms of hatred and intolerance, and the Police will send letters to other actors to take action within their jurisdiction,” the Brčko District Police stated.

The Mayor of the Brčko District of BiH, Sinša Milić, congratulated the members of the Brčko District Police of BiH on another quick and successful operation, during which they found the perpetrators of the desecration of the cemetery in Gornji Rahić.

“This is an act of vandalism that deserves the strongest condemnation from everyone, especially due to the fact that it occurred, or was discovered, on the eve of Bajram, a religious holiday celebrated by a large number of our fellow citizens.

Through professional and quick action by members of the Police, in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office, the perpetrators were found and it was determined that this vandalism, as well as previous incidents, graffiti on the White Mosque and the burning of the BiH flag on the building of the Audit Office, was not ethnically or religiously motivated,” said Milić in a statement for Fena.

He added that such actions by the District Police prevent any room for manipulation and political abuse of the event. Professional and responsible work of the Police is of key importance for multi-ethnic environments, such as the Brčko District, concludes Milić.

“However, regardless of the fact that it has been determined that this, as well as other recent incidents in Brčko, were not ethnically or religiously motivated, it should be emphasized that any similar vandalism, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrators and the owner of the damaged property, or its symbolism, is always just vandalism, which has a name and surname, not a nation and religion,” emphasizes the Mayor of Brčko.

He emphasizes that this information is, in fact, most important to those outside Brčko, who, especially in recent months, have been in a feverish search for anything that would confirm their thesis about the political and security crisis in the Brčko district and justify their “concerns”.

“Unfortunately for them, they have less and less material and time to prove their claims,” Milić is categorical, Fena writes.
