France’s highest court on Friday annulled the arrest warrant for former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over chemical attacks in 2013, according to media reports.

The French Court of Cassation decided to annul the arrest warrant for the former Syrian president, given that the immunity of a head of state cannot be lifted under any circumstances.

In November 2023, two Paris investigative judges issued an arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad for complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes related to chemical attacks in Adra, Douma, and Eastern Ghouta in August 2013, in which more than 1.000 people were killed.

The Paris Court of Appeal confirmed the arrest warrant in June 2024.
